Today we're going to do a tasting of Diplomatico Planas and Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. This rum (aka "ron") is a product of Venezuela and is built in the style of Venezuelan rums.
There is a bit of herbaceous flavors within Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva where Diplomatico Planas has a bit more of a bright, slightly overproof "fire" to it that brings along a nice flavor profile.
Unlike some Puerto Rican rums which tend to be subtle on total flavor profile (especially in their under four year old "light" rums) even Planas brings a character of flavor to the table (or your cocktail). There is a bit of "Funk" to the Planas, which is the usual definition used to talk about Jamaican rums -- usually that "funk" begins with some banana-like flavor profile. Mixed with a bit of brown sugar / blackstrap.
The Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is probably more of a sipper, but you can probably do it in a Daiquiri or some other rum-like flavor that doesn't destroy the overall profile of the Reserva.
Diplomatico is priced right, both are under $40 with planas about $30, and Reserva Exclusiva nearly $10 more.
